Another good book from THR。 Consistently good storytelling in this era, and DJO is awesome。

2。0-2。5I remember reading the first novel in The High Republic series and the first 100+ pages flew by, and I recalled what happened because it was exciting。 I read the first 100 pages or so of "Midnight Horizon" and it sort of flew by, but I honestly couldn't remember what was going on 5 seconds after turning the page。 If the adult novels are an inkling of the potential The High Republic project holds, the young adult novels are the series' weakest links with Midnight Horizon being the weakest。 2。0-2。5I remember reading the first novel in The High Republic series and the first 100+ pages flew by, and I recalled what happened because it was exciting。 I read the first 100 pages or so of "Midnight Horizon" and it sort of flew by, but I honestly couldn't remember what was going on 5 seconds after turning the page。 If the adult novels are an inkling of the potential The High Republic project holds, the young adult novels are the series' weakest links with Midnight Horizon being the weakest。Midnight Horizon has a lot of the issues I have with the YA High Republic stories, and the High Republic as a whole。 Lots of new characters thrown at the reader, a lot of overly dramatic posturing and romances, too many references to concurrent/previous events that happen, in different media and language/content that felt out of place in Star Wars。 I honestly really couldn't get into the plot of a cranky love-struck teenage CEO of a bodyguard service for celebrities (one of which is an alien that eats cute furry animals and whose name is literally "Cruella" but with a "f" added in)。 And yet plotlines and content like that dominated the first half of the book。 The book also tries to lean into Star Wars' newfound (but mostly ironic) appreciation for the word "Wizard", The Phantom Menace's synonym for something being awesome。 Unlike The Mandalorian's or Robot Chicken's use of Wizard I got really annoyed with the phrase and the book with it。All of this makes 70% of the book a chore to read。 It does pick up in the last 30% when the boiling conflict finally spills over。 But even a battle (and a surprise appearance by Yoda) can be somewhat unfulfilling if you can't get engaged in the lead-up, which is exactly what happens with Midnight Horizon。As is clear, I'm not a fan of "Midnight Horizon" even as I haven't given up on The High Republic。 But if Lucasfilm doesn't learn from the mistakes of Midnight Horizon and other books of the first round of High Republic content, I may become too disinterested to continue with the miniseries。 。。。more

I really wanted to like this book as Reath and Cormac are two of the Jedi I like most in the High Republic era, but this was Padawan shenanigans at its worst。 I will say that I might be giving this book a harder time than it deserves based on the audiobook, which was not good。 The narrator portrayed every teenager with a nasally whine。 A character that showed up in the final 10th of the book also killed it for me because I never wanted that again, yet here we are, with yet another affirmation th I really wanted to like this book as Reath and Cormac are two of the Jedi I like most in the High Republic era, but this was Padawan shenanigans at its worst。 I will say that I might be giving this book a harder time than it deserves based on the audiobook, which was not good。 The narrator portrayed every teenager with a nasally whine。 A character that showed up in the final 10th of the book also killed it for me because I never wanted that again, yet here we are, with yet another affirmation that Star Wars Canon isn't being written for me。 。。。more

Exceptional StoryFrom the moment I picked up the book until it was completed, I was captivated by the story。 While some books have a simple plot with a few twists and turns, the Midnight Horizon expounds upon multiple storylines with many twists and turns。 I was drawn into the story of about a dozen different characters and hoped for their best。 This is about my 25th Star Wars book to read, and it is one my favorites。 I highly recommend it。

That strains credulity for the internal logic of The High Republic Series and speaks nothing of the fact that the subsequent book in this series literally shows the Jedi's Starlight Beacon space station crashing in flames on the cover。 To me, this does not represent the Jedi at their height。 。。。more

Also, several curse words were dropped in that are totally unnecessary and jarring, particularly in a YA book。 I typically try and make my way through an entire book before I judge it, but a little less than the third of the way in, after two teenage boys who had known each other for 5 days were talking about how they hadn't slept together yet but knew they would soon, I had enough and called it quits, not willing to read any more of this garbage。 I fully expect to avoid this author completely in the future! 。。。more

I enjoyed the overall storyline (as I have with the rest of The High Republic) but felt the tone/writing was a bit weak compared to the rest of the series。 This read a bit more childish, closer to a junior reader, compared to the other YA additions to the High Republic。

Star Wars – The High Republic -Midnight Horizon by Daniel José Older is the final book in phase one of the High Republic multimedia project, and while not as action packed as Fallen Star, this Young Adult book has a lot of interesting things to add to the overall story。 This is a character heavy book, sometimes bordering on being thematically a romance novel of sorts, so it will be interesting to see how divisive it is by other fans。 The big draw for me is the inclusion of a handful of character Star Wars – The High Republic -Midnight Horizon by Daniel José Older is the final book in phase one of the High Republic multimedia project, and while not as action packed as Fallen Star, this Young Adult book has a lot of interesting things to add to the overall story。 This is a character heavy book, sometimes bordering on being thematically a romance novel of sorts, so it will be interesting to see how divisive it is by other fans。 The big draw for me is the inclusion of a handful of characters previously seen in other books, such a Reath Silas, a character that has been slowly becoming one of my favorites in this whole series。One of the more interesting topics this book touches on is the concept of attachment, which is one of the more important facets that guides The Jedi order。 We have seen many times that Jedi that hold onto personal attachments ultimately slip into The Dark Side, the most famous being Anakin Skywalker who let personal relationships, among other things, drive him into the arms of The Sith。 Reath Silas realizes that he has fallen victims to a multitude of teenage crushes, most notably a Nihil spy that used flirting to extract information from him。 To counter this, he now seems to be holding onto crushes on everyone as to not create on attachment that clouds his mind。 The book discusses that when Jedi try to suppress urges such as attraction to the opposite sex, it usually results in a slide into the dark, so achieving a balance between your relationships is the true way to handle things。 Despite being a mere Padawan, many other older Jedi, such as Elzar Mann, could learn a thing or two from Reath。Like a lot of these books, the story hangs on a murder mystery, this time the death of a prominent member of a bodyguard service and disappearance of his important client, an act we readers know as an act of Nihil aggression。 This is an issue for Alys “Crash” Ongwa, a young-ish woman that acts as the head of the Supreme Coronet City Diplomat Protection Agency, as her company as seemingly blamed for this brazen attack, or rather her lack of preparedness for it。 Behind the scenes there are rumors of Nihil operating on Coreillia, and some shady goings on that seem to signify that they are starting to trickle into core worlds。 jedi are being sent off, leaving the planet largely undefended, and it all seems as if a conspiracy is afoot。 Readers know this is all a part of Marchion Ro’s master plan to destroy Starlight Beacon and lay waste to the Republic。 Unfortunately, The Nihil don’t take into account that Ram Jomaram, Reath Silas, Cohmac Vitus, and Kantam Sy would soon be investigating these rumors。While I cringed at the prospect of yet MORE new characters this late into the lifecycle of this initiative, this book handles it well and fleshes out some of the characters in a previous book, Race to Crashpoint Tower a LOT。 While I like Older’s work on the comics, I felt that Crashpoint Tower was easily my least favorite book of all of these because it just threw the readers into the middle of a story that seemed like an excised extra chapter from another book。 Characters like Ram Jomaram are a lot better here, albeit I could see him as being annoying if not grouped with a straight-man sort of character, for which Reath definitely fits the bill。One of the goofier things about Ram is his over-use of the term “Wizard”, which fans may remember as a slang term in The Phantom Menace that has somewhat become an inside joke in Star Wars fandom ever since。 The Robot Chicken Star Wars Specials even had a gag where Darth Vader was pondering “How come nobody says ‘wizard’ anymore?”, then after killing Palpatine, asks Luke “That was pretty Wizard right?!”。 Din Djarin from The Mandalorian uses the phrase, and now Ram, some hundreds of years prior, is a huge fan。 Perhaps he’s even the originator? Like I said, this could be annoying, but the author does good by not over-doing it。The book is a bit slow at first, which according to other reviews is a typical complaint about the Young Adult books as a whole, but has a fairly action packed second half culminating in a pretty solid final arc, The Battle of Corellia。 It was one of the cooler action-scenes in this whole line so far, and was a great ending to the book。 I will say the book dragged a bit when it did this whole sub-plot involving an almost farcical scheme to dress up a character named Zeen Mrala as a up-and-coming pop singing sensation, while Ram and Reath donned the garb of an ancient order of elite bodyguard child soldiers, in order to get information on possible Nihil activity by investigating the various night clubs in Coronet。 It was convoluted and frankly, pretty silly。 However, this segment in no way ruined the book。 Stuff like this did a great job of showing the socio-economic status of the planet and its culture, something a lot of Star Wars books somewhat avoid for whatever reason。Overall, this book was a HUGE step up from the previous work of Daniel José Older, and a solid final act of phase one of this series。 While not perfect, by any means, the book is entertaining and has a great ending, I just wish the middle wasn’t so random in an almost “The Last jedi” sort of way。 I am excited to get my hands on more stories with some of these characters even though it appears as if we have to wait out another year or so, but I’m sure the wait will be well worth it! 。。。more

I’ve been a fan of The High Republic pretty much since I first listened to the first book on audible, with me owning the physical versions of every other book in the series since。 This book is the final entry in phase 1 of the overall HR saga and man was I disappointed with it。Following up a story after more adult oriented “The Fallen Star” was already going to be tough to beat, but even the previous YA novel “Out of the Shadows” was a really good look into the life’s of the younger Jedi and the I’ve been a fan of The High Republic pretty much since I first listened to the first book on audible, with me owning the physical versions of every other book in the series since。 This book is the final entry in phase 1 of the overall HR saga and man was I disappointed with it。Following up a story after more adult oriented “The Fallen Star” was already going to be tough to beat, but even the previous YA novel “Out of the Shadows” was a really good look into the life’s of the younger Jedi and the struggles of growing up within such a strict order, with a cool subplot involving abandoned。 This book continues the journey of one of my favourite padawans (Reath), but decides to forget about the potential whereabouts of the other characters we’ve been following, instead choosing to introduce some new characters that really felt utterly pointless in the grand scheme。 Even then the returning Jedi get nothing really to do, in a story that (I think I know what was going on?) is convoluted and really doesn’t flow like the others in this series。 It seems like the author was just a really big fan of The Mandalorian and decided to use this story as an excuse to tell the story of why the word “Wizard” means “cool”。 It wasn’t wizard and had no midnights or horizons in it。1。5 stars 。。。more

Is this what Star Wars has become? The only saving grace from this book was the final act。 It was full of action and that felt like Star Wars to me。 But to get to that point it was a real chore。The only thing I can really say positive about this book is that it met expectations。 At this point in this series I expect a book to be between two and three stars。 It would be nice if I was surprised a little bit。 This series has definitely has run its course and to extend it is not doing any favors to the authors who are writing these books。 That includes this offering。 。。。more
